About Me
I’m Marilyn Thomas, candidate for Reeve of Tay Valley Township. Tay Valley is a truly special place, defined by its historic hamlets, beautiful natural landscape, and a deep-rooted spirit of neighbourliness. Having served as Councillor for Bathurst Ward and Chair of the DNETV Fire Rescue Board, alongside my work in management and local volunteer organizations, I understand the practical needs of our community.
I believe true leadership requires making sound decisions for the public good. I’m running for Reeve to bring collaborative, democratic governance back to our township and focus on three key pillars: community, economic, and environmental well-being. Together, we can practice fiscal responsibility, safeguard our natural habitats, support local businesses, and ensure Tay Valley remains a vibrant, welcoming home for generations to come.

Modernize by-laws to support farmers, tourism operators and local businesses. Access external funding to sustain and revitalize our economy for the next generation.

Safeguard our lakes, rivers and natural habitat. Proactively repair roads and bridges to protect the landscape and keep our community connected.
Democratic Leadership & Fiscal Responsibility
Governing collaboratively with Council and actively engaging citizens. No “Strong Mayor” overreach. Investing in municipal savings so we can handle emergencies without borrowing at high interest rates.

Why are you running for Reeve?
Serving as Councillor for Bathurst Ward and Chair of the DNETV Fire Rescue Board has been an incredible privilege. Through this work, alongside my professional and volunteer experience, I know that true leadership requires making sound decisions for the common good. I’m running for Reeve to bring that collaborative, practical leadership to all of Tay Valley Township.
What is your position on fiscal responsibility?
Council must continue investing in municipal savings accounts — what the older generation rightly called a “rainy day fund.” This ensures we can fix urgent infrastructure or handle natural disasters without borrowing money at high interest rates. Every dollar should deliver real value to residents.
What is your stance on “Strong Mayor” powers?
“Strong Mayor” powers override the democratic will of our people. True leadership means governing democratically. I will work collaboratively with Council and actively engage citizens and community organizations to move us forward together.
What experience do you bring to this role?
I’ve served as Councillor for Bathurst Ward and Chair of the DNETV Fire Rescue Board. I’m the Board and Donor Liaison for the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital Foundation. I managed Foodsmith’s for 14 years, gaining concrete management experience and insights into agriculture and food security. I also coordinated the Brown Shoe Factory Action Committee, successfully organizing educational upgrading and training for 150+ people laid off by the factory closure so they could regain employment.
How are you involved in the community?
I’m a Family Representative on the Perth Community Care Centre Community Council, a member of the Great War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and a volunteer with the Alzheimer Society of Lanark Leeds Grenville at the Perth site. Community service is at the heart of everything I do.
